On Sept. 26, the Brainerd Catholic community will host the second annual Run for the Son, “Faithful 5K” bringing together fitness, fellowship and faith in an event open to all. After a remarkably successful inaugural year, organizers are eager to build on that momentum and welcome even more participants — runners, walkers, families and community supporters from across the region.

The Faithful 5K was created with the vision of bringing the entire faith community together. While proceeds benefit faith formation programs across Brainerd-area Catholic churches, the event warmly welcomes people from all backgrounds. It is as much about unity as it is about competition. That spirit was evident in the inaugural race, where even the top finisher was not Catholic.

Held at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church and running along the scenic Buffalo Hills area, the race offers multiple ways to participate. Runners can choose between a professionally timed 5K or 10K, while children 12 and under can take part in the lively “Disciple Dash,” a 100-yard sprint on St. Andrew’s lawn. Those who prefer not to race are still invited to be part of the day by volunteering, sponsoring the event or simply supporting the community atmosphere.

Behind the scenes, the event takes months of careful planning. Race coordinator Mary Johnson, a veteran of 15 years with the Brainerd Jaycees, knows the details matter. From coordinating road permissions to navigating construction concerns and arranging on-site needs, her team works diligently to ensure a smooth and safe experience. Yet, as Johnson reflects, what stood out most last year was not the logistics, but the spirit of the event.

“There was excitement, of course,” she noted, “but also a real sense of peace.” Many participants shared that same experience — a feeling that the Holy Spirit was present throughout the day.

That sense of faith is woven into the race itself. Along the route, participants are encouraged by signs featuring Scripture passages and prayers. The presence of clergy, including the bishop and local priests, serves as a visible reminder of the event’s purpose: supporting youth faith formation and strengthening the life of the Church.

In its first year, the Faithful 5K drew more than 170 registered participants and raised approximately $11,000 — well beyond expectations. With more time to promote this year’s race, organizers hope to double participation and expand community involvement through additional sponsors and volunteers.

Each participant receives a race T-shirt, a finisher medal and a swag bag filled with sponsor goodies. Awards are presented across multiple age divisions. The event will also include food, beverages and a festive atmosphere, with live coverage from The Pulse Radio.

Registration remains open through race day, though early sign-up is encouraged — especially before Sept. 10 to guarantee a T-shirt.
